A Real-Life Skincare Routine for Women Over 40 That Fits
By Cathi Carrier, founder of PURELY BELLA
If your skincare routine has become a second job, you are allowed to simplify it. Skin can shift during perimenopause and midlife, but the answer is not automatically another serum, a stronger exfoliant, or a shelf full of promises. A thoughtful routine can be small, steady, and responsive to what your skin is telling you.
My esthetician's rule: build a routine you can live with
As an esthetician and the founder of PURELY BELLA, I have always believed that skincare should support your life, not take it over. I created the brand for women who want thoughtful care as their skin changes, without being told that getting older is a problem to solve. A routine should make sense on an ordinary Tuesday, not only on the one night you have an hour, perfect lighting, and unlimited patience.
That is why I value a few basics you can repeat over a complicated schedule. There is no prize for the most steps. A good routine feels comfortable and realistic enough to return to after a busy week, a trip, or a night when you simply went to bed.
Start with the anchors
When you are unsure what your skin needs, return to a few simple foundations.
- Keep cleansing comfortable. A morning water rinse or gentle cleanser may suit you. In the evening, cleanse away makeup, sunscreen, and buildup without leaving skin tight or stripped.
- Moisturize for how your skin feels today. Choose a texture you enjoy. A richer cream may feel welcome when skin is dry, while a lighter lotion may be enough at other times.
- Make sun protection part of the morning. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen you like wearing and follow its label directions. A product you reach for regularly is more useful than one left untouched on the shelf.
- Let the evening be a reset. After cleansing, moisturize. If you use a targeted product your skin tolerates, follow its directions rather than adding several popular actives at once.
Specific products and textures are individual choices. Notice how your skin feels after you use something, and give yourself permission to adjust. A routine is not a contract you sign once and can never change.
Let your skin set the pace
Perimenopause and midlife do not create one universal skin type. You may notice dryness, sensitivity, breakouts, or a mix that changes from week to week. Weather, stress, sleep, and products can also affect how your skin feels. One symptom cannot tell you exactly what is happening, so approach changes with curiosity rather than blame.
If you are experimenting with a new product, keep the rest of your routine familiar. Introduce one new item at a time, follow its directions, and pay attention to how your skin responds. When something stings or leaves you feeling uncomfortable, pause it instead of pushing through just to finish the bottle.
- Make one change at a time. It is easier to notice what works when you are not introducing several products together.
- Be cautious with products that promise dramatic results. Stronger is not automatically better, especially when your skin is feeling reactive.
- Ask for individualized guidance. A licensed esthetician or health care professional can help when a concern is persistent, painful, or worrying you.
Choose consistency, not perfection
When I help someone rethink her routine, I start with a few questions. What is bothering you most right now? Which products feel comfortable? Which steps do you look forward to, and which feel like homework? Those answers are a better starting point than a trend list or someone else's routine.
- Keep the steps that feel supportive and easy to repeat.
- Set aside products that irritate you or no longer fit your needs.
- Choose one concern to focus on before adding another targeted product.
Then give your routine enough time to become a habit. You can review it again when the season changes or your skin feels different. Caring for yourself does not have to mean chasing a younger version of your face. Pro-aging skincare makes room for your experience, your preferences, and the skin you are in now.
A small check-in for your next routine reset
Keep the basics you use and set aside products that no longer fit your needs. The goal is not to start over, but to make daily care feel more manageable.
