Astaxanthin

6,000× More Potent Than Vitamin C

Your skin changed. So should your skincare.

Meet Astaxanthin — the super antioxidant that works at the cellular level to fight dullness, hyperpigmentation, and sensitivity. 6,000× more potent than Vitamin C. And the reason Cathi stopped recommending everything else after 32 years behind the treatment table.

You're not imagining it.

Around perimenopause, skin changes — fast. The brightness you counted on feels muted. Dark spots that once faded in a week now linger for months. Products you've trusted for years suddenly sting, or peel, or just stop working.

That's not a mystery. It's biology. As estrogen drops, skin loses its primary hormonal antioxidant shield. Free radicals accumulate faster. Collagen breaks down more quickly. The skin barrier thins and becomes reactive. The result is a complexion that looks and behaves nothing like the one you've maintained for decades.

The skincare industry's answer is usually to throw retinol and acids at it — ingredients that work by damaging skin into renewal. At Purely Bella, we think that's the wrong approach for a skin barrier that's already under stress. So we went looking for something else.

We found Astaxanthin.

What exactly is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid — the pigment that makes wild-caught salmon pink, flamingos red, and certain algae a vivid orange-red. It's produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis as a survival mechanism: when the algae is stressed by UV light, nutrient deprivation, or extreme temperatures, it produces massive concentrations of Astaxanthin to protect itself from oxidative damage.

In other words, it evolved specifically to survive exactly the kind of environmental assault that ages human skin.

After 32 years of studying skin through every trend, every "breakthrough," and every clinical revolution, Cathi chose Astaxanthin as the foundation of Purely Bella. Not because it was new. Because the science was — and is — unlike anything else.

What makes it different — at the cellular level.

Most antioxidants protect skin from one direction. Vitamin C works in the water-based (hydrophilic) environment outside the cell. Beta-carotene works in the fat-based (lipophilic) environment inside it. Neither works in both.

Astaxanthin works in both at once.

Its unique molecular structure allows it to span the entire cell membrane — anchoring on both the inner and outer layers simultaneously. While one end of the molecule scavenges free radicals outside the cell, the other end is doing the same work inside it. No other antioxidant we know of does this. It means Astaxanthin provides complete 360-degree cellular protection that other ingredients simply can't replicate.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • It neutralizes free radicals before they cause damage. Free radicals — produced by UV exposure, pollution, stress, and the hormonal shifts of perimenopause — are the primary driver of skin aging. Astaxanthin quenches them faster and more completely than any other topical antioxidant, including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta-carotene, and CoQ10.
  • It protects your collagen from breaking down. Astaxanthin suppresses MMP-1, the enzyme responsible for degrading collagen. It also activates the TGF-β pathway, which stimulates new collagen production. The result: slower collagen loss and more support for existing structure over time.
  • It calms inflammation at the source. By modulating the NF-κB pathway — one of the body's primary inflammatory signaling routes — Astaxanthin reduces the chronic low-grade inflammation that drives sensitivity, redness, and accelerated aging in perimenopausal skin. This is why Purely Bella formulas feel so calm on reactive skin. It's not a coincidence.
  • It suppresses hyperpigmentation from the inside out. Astaxanthin inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin production. It also blocks the UV-triggered signals that cause melanocytes to overproduce pigment in the first place. The result: dark spots fade more consistently, and new ones form more slowly.
  • It never becomes a pro-oxidant. Many antioxidants — including beta-carotene in high concentrations — can flip and cause oxidative damage once they've neutralized a free radical. Astaxanthin's unique molecular stability means it gives without taking. It protects without ever becoming the problem.

The 6,000× stat — here's what it actually means.

You've seen the number. Here's the context. In independent antioxidant capacity research measuring singlet oxygen quenching — the primary mechanism by which antioxidants neutralize UV-generated free radicals — Astaxanthin outperformed:

Antioxidant Astaxanthin is stronger by
Vitamin C 6,000×
Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) 550×
Beta-carotene 54×
CoQ10 800×
Lutein 200×

Based on ORAC singlet oxygen quenching capacity values and published comparative antioxidant research.

These aren't marketing numbers. They're why, in a 2024 analysis by the American Academy of Dermatology, Astaxanthin was listed among the top compounds in human skin health research. The science has been building for over two decades. Cathi has been following it for all of them.

Why Astaxanthin is built for this chapter.

Perimenopausal and post-menopausal skin faces a specific, compounding challenge. Falling estrogen levels don't just affect collagen production — they reduce the skin's endogenous antioxidant capacity. The skin literally becomes less able to protect itself at the exact moment it's losing structural support.

Clinical studies bear this out directly. Research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that women over 40 who used Astaxanthin for 8 weeks showed significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth — without any of the irritation associated with retinol or exfoliating acids. A 16-week clinical trial in women aged 40–60 found that the Astaxanthin group maintained skin moisture and elasticity while the placebo group experienced measurable decline.

The skin's needs at 42, at 49, at 55 are genuinely different from what they were at 30. Astaxanthin is one of the few ingredients with clinical evidence specifically in this population. That's not a coincidence — it's why Cathi formulated around it.

Why I built an entire brand around one ingredient.

"In 32 years of working with skin, I've seen a lot of 'revolutionary' ingredients come and go. Astaxanthin didn't come and go. The research got stronger, the clinical data got clearer, and every time I thought I might find something better for perimenopausal skin specifically — I came back to this. It protects the cell. It calms the inflammation. It doesn't irritate a barrier that's already under stress. It brightens without burning. I formulated Purely Bella because I was looking for something I could believe in completely — and this was it."

The Purely Bella Astaxanthin Collection

These three formulas are built on Astaxanthin as the hero ingredient. Three products. One hero. Your full daily ritual.

Flawless Brightening Moisturizer

$68

Dullness · Hyperpigmentation · Uneven tone

Your AM ritual. Lightweight enough to wear daily under SPF, potent enough to visibly even skin tone over time. Astaxanthin works throughout the day to neutralize UV-generated free radicals before they trigger melanin overproduction — targeting hyperpigmentation at the source rather than just bleaching what's already there.

Best for: Dark spots, post-hormonal glow loss, skin that's brightening-resistant

Try It Risk-Free →

Dream Skin Night Cream

$68

Collagen support · Overnight repair · Firmness

While you sleep, your skin enters its peak repair cycle. Astaxanthin in this formula works with that biology — protecting collagen from MMP-1 degradation and supporting new synthesis via the TGF-β pathway. The result is skin that wakes up measurably more supple over time, not just temporarily plumped.

Best for: Firmness loss, overnight moisture, women who want to wake up to different skin

Tight & Bright Peptide Eye Gel

$64

Fine lines · Puffiness · Dark circles

The eye area shows perimenopausal skin changes first — the skin is thinner, the collagen is more fragile, and the cumulative free radical damage concentrates visibly here. Astaxanthin + peptides work together: Astaxanthin handles the oxidative and inflammatory drivers while peptides signal directly for collagen production. Non-irritating enough for the most reactive skin.

Best for: Crow's feet, dark circles with an oxidative component, puffiness
