Perimenopause Skincare: What Actually Works After 40
By Cathi Carrier, licensed esthetician
Your skin at 45 is not the skin you had at 35. Pretending otherwise is why so many women feel let down by products they used to love. In my treatment room, the women who see the biggest change are not the ones who buy the most products. They are the ones who simplify and stay consistent.
If you want to understand why your skin changed first, start with my complete guide to perimenopause skincare. This guide is the practical part: what to use, what to skip, and how to put it together.
Why different skincare works better now
As estrogen shifts, skin holds less moisture, repairs more slowly, and reacts faster. So the goal changes. Instead of pushing skin harder, you support it first, then add gentle, targeted treatment. Regular skincare is often built for skin that bounces back quickly. Perimenopausal skin needs more care up front and patience with actives.
The rules I give every client
1. Rebuild the barrier before you chase the glow
Most redness, stinging, and flaking comes back to a stressed barrier. Look for skin-compatible oils, squalane, shea butter, and gentle humectants. When your barrier is steady, everything else works better. My barrier repair guide for women over 40 goes deeper.
2. Fewer steps, more multi-tasking
You do not need a separate serum for every concern. A well-built moisturizer can do serum-level work and moisturize in one step. That is easier on reactive skin and easier to stick with.
3. Choose slow, steady actives
Swap harsh scrubs and high-strength acids for slower AHAs like mandelic and lactic acid a few evenings a week. Choose a gentle form of retinol, or bakuchiol if retinol has never agreed with you. Introduce one new active at a time. Here is how to exfoliate perimenopausal skin without irritation.
4. Feed skin antioxidants
Antioxidants like astaxanthin, niacinamide, CoQ10, and vitamin E help defend skin from the daily oxidative stress that wears down collagen and the barrier.
5. Brighten through more than one pathway
Hormonal discoloration has more than one cause, so single-ingredient brighteners often fall short. Pairing ingredients like niacinamide, tranexamic acid, and kojic acid covers more ground.
6. Sunscreen every single day
SPF 30 or higher, every morning, even when it is cloudy. No serum can outwork daily UV, and thinner, more reactive skin needs the protection more than ever.
What to skip
- Foaming cleansers that leave skin squeaky or tight
- Rough physical scrubs and daily acid use
- Starting several new actives in the same week
- Very hot water on your face
- Routines with so many steps that you cannot keep them up
A simple perimenopause routine
This is how I build The Perimenopause Method around Support, Renew, and Brighten.
Morning
- Cleanse or rinse. A splash of lukewarm water is often enough in the morning.
- Hydrate. Mist with Serenity Cooling Mist, a rose and aloe mist for face and body with a soft cooling finish.
- Eyes. Sweep on Tight & Bright Peptide Eye Gel, fragrance-free, with its cool metal tip.
- Treat and moisturize in one step. Flawless Niacinamide Brightening Moisturizer combines 5% niacinamide, 3% tranexamic acid, and kojic acid in a fragrance-free formula for dark spots and uneven tone.
- Sunscreen. SPF 30 or higher.
Evening
- Cleanse. Oasis Oil Cleanser melts off makeup and SPF, then rinses clean without the tight feeling.
- Hydrate. Serenity Cooling Mist on damp skin.
- Renew, two or three evenings a week. Gentle Renewal Exfoliating Pads with mandelic and lactic acid, fragrance-free.
- Moisturize overnight. Dream Skin Night Cream with astaxanthin, retinyl palmitate, shea butter, and squalane.
- Optional booster. Press a few drops of Bakuchiol + CoQ10 Renewal Oil Serum over your night cream when you want extra renewal and glow.
A note on scent: Oasis, Serenity, Dream Skin, and the Bakuchiol serum are scented naturally with essential oils, with no synthetic fragrance. Flawless, Tight & Bright, and the exfoliating pads are fragrance-free. If you react to botanicals, patch test first.
Not sure where to start? The Support Ritual is for dry, tight, reactive skin. The Renew Ritual is for dullness and texture. The Brighten Ritual is for dark spots and tired-looking eyes. The complete Perimenopause Method brings them all together.
Frequently asked questions
How many skincare steps do I need in perimenopause?
Usually fewer than you think. A gentle cleanser, a hydrating step, one multi-purpose moisturizer, and daily sunscreen cover most of what perimenopausal skin needs. Targeted treatments are added only when your skin is calm.
Can I still use retinol during perimenopause?
Yes, if your skin tolerates it. Start with a gentler form or a lower strength a few nights a week, and pause if your skin becomes red or flaky. Bakuchiol is an option for women who want a plant-based alternative.
How often should I exfoliate after 40?
For most perimenopausal skin, two or three evenings a week with a gentle AHA is plenty. If your skin is very sensitive, start once a week.
How long until I see results?
Comfort often improves within a few weeks of a gentler routine. Tone and texture take longer, usually 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use, because midlife skin renews more slowly.
Caring for the woman you are becoming
Pro-aging is not about turning back the clock, Bella. It is about giving the skin you have now what it actually needs, consistently, without punishing it. Watch how your skin responds week to week, not day to day. It absolutely still responds.

Cathi
